Defeating Armed Gangs in South Africa

Published:

A gang of armed thieves got more than they bargained for when they attempted to hold up a jewelry store in a shopping mall in Johannesburg.

The raid occurred shortly after opening time on a Wednesday morning. An expert gang of six armed criminals burst into the store, took hold of the security guards and attempted to get away with thousands of dollars in jewelry and cash.

Their attempted attack was prevented when the Smoke Screen Rapid HP unit, that had been installed just one month previously, was activated by a quick-thinking member of staff. It instantly filled the room with smoke, creating a barrier that obscured the gang's desired loot and protected the store's staff and customers.

The attempted robbery lasted just 23 seconds as the thieves were driven out of the center empty-handed.

Disoriented and confused by the smoke, the criminals continued to try and reach the safe, but they couldn't see what they were doing and the safe and its contents were safely concealed. Realizing that their raid was futile, they fled the scene. Thanks to the Smoke Screen, nothing was taken from the store and nobody was hurt.

When the police arrived on the scene, the criminals were nowhere to be seen.

Jewelry stores are a favorite target for fast and violent criminals, who can be in and out with the loot in minutes. Preventative fogging solutions are rapidly becoming the most effective way of thwarting these raids and lead the battle against smash-and-grab attacks.
